Stroke has been the second to third most common cause of death in both developing and most developed countries, including the Czech Republic, for many years. Globally, stroke affects about 15 million people a year and is responsible for more than 5 million deaths a year, representing about 10 % of all deaths. Another more than 50 % of patients remain non-self-sufficient after stroke. As a result, strokes are among the most common causes of death and are the most common cause of disability in the population. Acute recanalization of the occluded cerebral artery by pharmacological or endovascular recanalization represents a significant advance in the treatment of ischemic stroke over the last 20 years in Czech Republic.
